CNIX Glossopharyngeal Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are the nuclei of the glossopharyngeal nerve and what do they do?
Nucleus ambiguous: motor to the stylopharyngeal muscle
Inferior salivatory nucleus: parasympathetics to the parotid gland
Solitary nucleus: autonomic barrel receptor visceral afferent AND taste from the posterior 1/3 of the tongue
Nucleus of the spinal tract of the trigeminal: sensory sensation from back of throat (sensory for gag reflex)
What information goes to the solitary nucleus?
- cranial nerve 7 Facial Taste from anterior 2/3 of tongue.
- CNIX Glossopharyngeal taste from posterior 1/3 of tongue
- sensory information from autonomic barrow receptors from the carotid artery.
What is the path of motor information to the parotid gland?
Fibers from the inferior salivatory nucleus exit through the jugular foramen and form the tympanic nerve ➡️ Postganglionic sympathetic fibers from the carotid plexus join the tympanic nerve to form the lesser petrosal nerve ➡️ The lesser petrol nerve synapses at the otic ganglion ➡️ fibers from the otic ganglion join the auriculotemporal nerve (a division of trigeminal mandibular V3) and synapse at the parotid gland to produce saliva.
Interesting note: The middle meningeal artery passes through a loop of the auricular temporal nerve before entering the foramen spinosum with the meningeal branch of the mandibular division of the trigeminal.
What muscle does a glossopharyngeal nerve control?
The stylopharyngeus muscle
What are the fibers that leave the inferior salivatory nucleus called?
The tympanic nerve
How does a glypharyngeal nerve leave the skull?
The jugular foramen
What symptoms do lesions of the glossopharyngeal nerve cause?
Aberrations and blood pressure
Sometimes pain: glossopharyngeal neuralgia
Loss of sensation in the nasopharynx
Absent gag reflex (inability to feel tongue depressor)
What ganglion sends fibers to the parotid gland
Otic ganglion
What cranial nerves run from the solitary nucleus?
Vegas : taste from the back of the throat and parasympathetics
Glossopharyngeal: taste from the posterior 1/3 of the tongue and visceral afferents from carotid body and sinus.
Facial: taste from the anterior 2/3 of the tongue
What nerves run to the spinal tract of the trigeminal
Trigeminal: pain and temperature from the face
Glasopharyngeal: sensory from the back of the tongue and throat (necessary for gag reflex)
Vagus: sensory from the larynx pharynx in her ears and meninges (posterior)
