CNV1 Flashcards
(31 cards)
describe the sensory purpose of CNV
sensation to the skin of face, oral, nasal sinuses and teeth
where are the greater and lesser palatine foramen?
palatine bone
what is the function of foramina?
passage of neurovascular structures
which root is bigger?
sensory
what is the function of the mesencephalic nucleus?
proprioception
what is the function of the chief sensory nucleus?
discriminative touch
what is the function of the spinal nucleus?
pain and temperature for structures supplied by CNV as well as general conscious sensation for the viscera supplied by CN IX & X
describe the roots emergence
from mid-pons and pass forward onto the apex of the petrous temporal bone where trigeminal ganglion lies in cave of dura mater
where would a lesion be if all divisions were affected?
pons or cranial base
where does CNV1 leave the root?
superior orbital fissure
where does CNV2 leave the root?
foramen rotundum
where does CNV3 leave the root?
foramen ovale
describe the course of CNV1 (opthalmic)
passes anteriorly in the lateral wall of the cavernous sinus to reach the superior orbital fissure
what are the main branches of CNV1?
frontal
lacrimal
nasociliary
what does the frontal nerve branch into and what does it supply?
supraorbital and supratrochlear
-skin of vertex of vertex & upper eyelid/forehead
where does the lacrimal nerve terminate and what does it supply?
lacrimal gland
skin of lateral upper eyelid & forehead
what does the nasociliary nerve branch into and what does it supply?
long ciliary nerve, anterior and posterior ethmoidal nerves, continues as infratrochlear nerve to skin of medial upper eyelid & root of nose
what supplies the vertex, upper eyelids & forehead?
supratrochlear, supraorbital and lacrimal nerves
what supplies the skin at medial angle of eye and adjacent root of nose?
infratrochlear nerve
what supplies the skin at tip of nose?
anterior ethmoidal nerve as external nasal nerve
describe the course of CNV2
passes anteriorly in the lateral wall of the cavernous sinus and reach pterygopalatine fossa via the foramen rotundum
where is the pterygopalatine fossa?
lateral to the upper aspect of the nasal cavity and nasopharynx behind the orbit and above the hard/soft palate
what are the main branches of CNV2 ?
zygomatic
infra-orbital
what are the other branches of CNV2?
nasopalatine to nasal cavity
greater & lesser palatine to palate
alveolar to upper teeth
pharyngeal to nasopharynx
