Coast Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is a fetch ?
The distance over which the wind blows across the sea , generating waves.a longer fetch results in larger , more powerful waves. ( the distance a wave travels)
What is a swash?
The movement of water up the beach after a wave breaks. It carries sediment and deposits material
What is a backwash?
The water that flows back down the beach towards the sea , often pulling sediments with it
What is coastal deposition?
Coastal deposition happens when waves lose energy and rip the sediment they carry.
What is deposition likely to occur?
- Waves enter an area of shallow water
- Waves enter a sheltered area , e.g. a bay
- When there is a little wind
- When there is a good supply of material
What are the coastal features of erosion ?
Erosion (formed by destructive waves) - sea cliff , cave , arch , stack , stump , blowhole , wave cut platform
What are the coastal features of deposition ?
Deposition (formed by constructive waves - beach , sand split , sand bar , tombolo , lagoon
