coastal landforms Flashcards
(11 cards)
what is a coastal landform?
landforms that are found along the coast that have been created by coastal processes
what is a bay?
is an inlet of sea where the land curves inwards usually with a beach
how is a bay formed?
through the waves eroding softer rock along a coastline faster than harder rock
what is a headland?
a high area of land that extends out into the sea
how is a headland formed?
through the soft rock being eroded inwards and the hard rock juts outwards
what is a wave cut platform?
a flat area just infront of the cliff just below the tide mark
how is a wave cut platform formed?
- the sea attacks the base of the cliff between the high and low water mark
- a wave cut notch is formed by erosional processes such as abrasion and hydraulic action
- as the notch increases in size the cliff becomes unstable and collapses leading to the retreat of the cliff face
- the process repeats and the cliff continues to retreat
caves
a large hole in the cliff caused by waves forcing their way into cracks in the cliff face
stack
an isolated pillar of rock left when the top of an arch has collapsed
stump
the remaining piece of a stack after it has been eroded by waves
arches
is a wave eroded passage through a small headland
