Coastal Landscapes Flashcards
physical geography - paper 1 (9 cards)
what are the 3 main factors which influence the size of a wave?
1) wind velocity
2) duration
3) the FETCH
define wind velocity
speed of the wind
define duration, in terms of a wave
the length of time the wind has been blowing over the sea
define FETCH.
the distance over which the wind has been able to blow across the water
define swash.
water washing up the beach when a wave breaks
define backwash.
when the wave runs back down the beach to the sea
what are destructive waves?
waves responsible for coastal erosion, characterized by a strong backwash that pulls sediment away from the beach
what are constructive waves?
waves responsible for deposition in coastal areas, builds up beaches by depositing more material than it removes
