What are the hard engineering techniques used?

Groynes- last about 20 years (stop longshore drift)- replaced £1250 pm for 20-30m this is unsustainable

Sea walls- old wall destroyed in 2002 rebuilt for 4m in 2004 (deflects waves and protects promenade)-too expensive to maintain- unsustainable

Gabion boxes- new wire mesh boxes filled with stones in mouth of shimna river in 2006 (absorb wave energy and protect mouth of shimna river)- sustainable because it maintains tourist attraction and absorbs energy better than sea walls- need to be replaced after time and expensive
