What is hard engineering
Involves building artificial structures and do not work with nature
What is soft engineering
Approuch that works with nature like besch nourishment
Examples of hard engineering
Sea walls, rock armour, gabions, groynes
Examples of soft engineering
Beach nourishment, reprofiling, Dune nourishment
What is managed retreat
When flooding is a high risk and happens alot, and if a land is low value the people that live their are relocated
What is rock armour
Large boulders placed at the foot of a cliff that are used to break the waves and absorb there energy.
What are gabions
Rocks held in mesh cages and they are placed in areas effected by erosion
What are groynes
Wooden or rock structurs build at a right angle to the sea
What is beach nourishment
Sand is pumped onto an already existing beach to build it up
Reprofiling
Sediment is redistributed from the lower part of the beach to the upper part
What is dune nourishment
Marram grass that is planted on sand dunes to stabilise them because of the roots
