What is a sediment cell?
A linked system of sources/inputs, transfers and outputs/sinks.
How may sediment cells are there in England and wales?
11
What is an input when discussing sediment cells? What are some examples?
Places where sediment is generated from erosional processes, for example cliffs, sand dunes, aeolian movement and sub aerial processes.
What is a transfer in terms of sediment cells? What are some examples?
Places where sediment moves alongshore, for example through longshore drift, swash, backwash and wind.
What is an output/sink in terms of sediment cells? What are some examples?
Places where the dominant process is deposition, and depositional landforms are created. For example, beaches, sand dunes, spits and bars.
Why are sediment cells described as dynamic?
There is a constant movement of sediment throughout the system.
