Coasts Flashcards
(24 cards)
What are the 3 factors that influence the size of a wave?
Strength of wind
Amount of time wind has been blowing for
Fetch (how far the wave has travelled)
What is fetch?
How far a wave has travelled
If waves have more energy, will they be bigger or smaller?
Bigger
What is the swash of a wave?
When the wave goes into the beach depositing debris on the beach
🌊➡️🏖️🏝️
What is backwash?
When the wave goes back into the water bringing debris with it
🌊⬅️🏖️🏝️
Do destructive waves have a stronger swash or backwash?
Backwash
What is the crest of a wave?
The highest point of a wave
What is the trough of a wave?
The lowest point of a wave
What is the length of a wave?
The distance from the crest of one wave to a point on the same height on an adjacent wave
What is the height of the wave?
The distance between the trough of a wave and the crest of a wave
Does swash come at the beach at an angle or straight?
At an angle
Does the backwash come away from the beach straight or at an angle?
Straight
Do constructive waves have a bigger swash or backwash?
Swash
Are constructive waves created in calm weather or stormy weather?
Calm
Are destructive waves created in calm or stormy weather?
Stormy
Which has more power:
a constructive wave or a destructive wave?
A destructive wave
Do constructive waves have low heights or high heights?
Low
Do destructive have low heights or high heights?
High
How many different types of erosion are there?
4
What are the different types of erosion?
Hydraulic action
Abrasion
Attrition
Corrosion/solution
What is hydraulic action?
A form of erosion that involves waves forcing air and water into cracks in the cliff face, expanding the cracks and eventually breaking off parts of the cliff.
What is abrasion?
Waves throw debris and sediment at the cliff face and break off chunks of it.
What is attrition?
A form of erosion where rocks chisel away at each other, therefore rounding and shrinking each other.
What is corrosion/solution?
A process of erosion including weak acids in the sea wearing away and dissolving the alkaline cliff face.
