Coasts Flashcards
(14 cards)
Whats constructive waves
Constructive = Build beaches (strong swash, gentle waves
Whats the two types of waves
Deconstructive and constuctive
What are deconstructive waves
Destructive = Destroy beaches (strong backwash, big powerful waves).
What are the 4 types of erosion
Hydraulic action abrasion attrition and solution
Whats Hydraulic action
Hydraulic action is when waves crash against rocks, forcing air into cracks. The pressure breaks the rock over time.
Whats attrition
Attrition: Rocks smash into each other and break.
Whats abrasion
Abrasion: Waves throw pebbles at cliffs which wears it down like sandpaper
Whats solution
Solution: Sea dissolves some types of rock.
How do we manage coasts
Hard engineering and soft engineering
Whats hard engineering
Hard engineering : Build walls, big rocks, groynes (barriers).
Whats soft engineering
Good management protects people and saves money.
Wheres holderness coast
On England’s east coast
Why is holderness coast so vulnerable to erosion
Soft clay cliffs + strong destructive waves + longshore drift = fast erosion at Holderness
How is Holderness coast protected
People build sea walls and rock barriers to protect it.
