How can employees misuse code of conduct?
- Introduction of virus into a company’s system by clicking or downloading data. Employees bringing in disks or work on USB drives.
- Misuse of ICT - using the companies printers for personal work.
- Distribution of material that is racially a sexually offensive - circulating images on emails that people might find offensive.
- Misuse of data for illegal purposes- using emails on the Internet to bully colleagues at work.
- Inappropriate use of mobile phones- in restaurants, schools, public transport.
- Blackmail-computer fraud or selling to other organisations.
What are the factors that code of conduct should contain?
- Responsibilities-employee must abide by the rules of the company and act responsibly for the security and well being of the company.
- Respecting the rights of others-be aware of other workers, no bullying or spreading rumours on emails about co-workers.
- Remaining by the current legislation-such as data protection act computer misuse act and Copyright act.
- Complying with licensing agreements-not using company software on your own computer without license.
- Protecting hardware and software from malicious damage-make sure that equipment is not damaged on purpose.
- Security-don’t disclose passwords and personal use of email logging on and off procedures.
How can a company enforce the code of conduct?
Penalties are given for misuse depending on how serious the breach-penalties include, informal warnings,written warnings, dismissal and prosecution.
What is the definition of code of conduct?
And employee code of conduct consists of set of rules made up by the senior management that set out what an employee is/isn’t allowed to do in the course of their employment. If they break these rules they will have to face consequences.
Describe three different examples which illustrate the difference between legal and moral issues with respect to codes of conduct?
- DISINFORMATION : moral issue - not fully informing customers of all available facts concerning products/services. Legal issue - estate agents putting false information in adverts.
- PRIVACY : moral issue - Company buying information off other companies in order to send you junk mail about buying products. Legal issue - selling details of individuals even though they have clearly specified that this should not be done.
- EMPLOYMENT PATTERNS : moral issue - workers feel that ICT is invading their privacy and spying on them by monitoring the use of computer. Legal issue - business have to address issues such as back strain and RSI or they could possibly face legal action from employees.
