Common similarities in origin and design

A

-all built by William I succeeding his victory against the British in the battle of Hastings therefore as a foreign king he had to reinforce his reign
-All feature stone keeps (The white tower built by William I and The Great Tower at Dover built to by Henry II who largely took inspiration from his ancestors design (used Kentish Ragstone and Caen stone from northern France)
-All features concentric outer walls and inner baileys

Key aspects of the great tower?

A

-Dover Stone Keep= cost over £4000 and similarly John I spent £1,400 on improvements and lavish upgrades such as gloriette (building in garden) , indoor toilet and interior decoration
-inspired by William I White Tower at the Tower of London
-Made from Kentish Ragstone and Caen Stone imported from France
-All feature stone keeps
-All royal residences, Dover and Tower of London features three flaws and a chaple (comfortable) and Cofe was inhabited by King John

-Defensive Fortress- All withstood siege (Dover in 1216 Prince Louie as John broke rules of Magna Carter ) (1214 at the Tower of London, Robert Fitzwalter sieged the Tower of London in order to enforce Magna Carter (1139 Cofe Castle withstood siege during Civil War
-Royal Residence (Dover=Henry II, White Tower however also used s prison , Cofe=King John)

What happened to Cofe Castle and Tower of London?

A

Tower of London= during Tudor period it became less of a royal residence and rather a prison. Used in WW2 to hold Nazi prisoners (Rudolf Hess)
Cofe Castle= not preserved well, The bankes family who owned the castle it had the castle demolished in support for the king during the civil war
-all used as tourist attraction today
