Cognitive Flashcards
Piaget
-Children only learn language at the speed of their cognitive development
-Post telegraphic stage = Preoperational Stage
-At Preoperational Stage children learn through pretend play, but still struggle with logic as have lower cognitive development
-Children must understand concept of something before they can learn the language for and around it, despite lots of CDS, children’s language is still stuck at their level of cognitive development
E.g. Superlatives are used when size is understood
Piaget Criticisms
-Children with developmental disorders such as William’s Syndrome have fully acquired language that often masks lower cognitive functioning, so can cognition be so closely linked to language development?
-This suggests other factors such as CDS have a greater role in language acquisition
