there is research support, research are found pregnant women with cognitive vulnerability such as dysfunctional thinking, are more likely to have postnatal depression, so there is a cognitive side to it before the depression

A

doesn’t explain all aspects of depression, some deeply depressed patients are deeply angry and Beck cannot explain this extreme emotion, so some people suffer hallucinations and this theory cannot explain it

Real life applications, changing the irrational beliefs to rational so the patient can deal with activating events causing depression

Two weaknesses of the Ellis’ ABC model

A
  • Explains depression only when there is an activating event, some people have a good life you are still depressed so a combined approach would be better as it takes all causes into account
  • Doesn’t explain all aspects of depression, only explains why some people appear to be more vulnerable to depression, the biological approach is better as it explains why drug therapies are good
