- scientific study of influence of brain structures on mental processes
- mapping brain areas
eg Broca identified how damage to area in frontal lobe impair speech production

- through fMRI and PET scans (advances in brain scanning techniques)
eg Tulving different long term memories located in opposite sides of pre-frontal cortex
