Q

what is cognitive neuroscience

A

Cognitive and biological processes can be integrated, leading to a discipline known as cognitive neuroscience, the scientific study of the brain structures, processes and chemistry that are responsible for thought processes

Q

Effects of cognitive neuroscience

A

Cognitive neuroscience has emerged with improvements in technology such as POSITIVE EMISSION TOPOGRAPHY (PET SCANS) & FUNCTIONAL MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (fMRI). These have been used to locate different types of memory in the brain e.g episodic memory for events is located in the hippocampus, semantic in the temporal lobe, and procedural in the cerebellum.

Q

cognitive neuroscience +

A

+) CN is more scientific and objective when conducting research studies than the CA

+) CN takes account for both nature an nurture. It has demonstrated brain plasticity throughout life supporting the role that experience shapes our brain. It also determined that biology is not destiny which is a form of soft determinism

+) CN has provided a neurobiological basis of why some psychological disorder form, leading to the development of new therapeutics and removing blame from a patient

+) CN can be used for early identification of cognitive problems before observable behaviour, leading to potential of early intervention
