Cold-blooded Flashcards
(26 cards)
Vertebrates
animals with backbones
Endotherms
an animal that is dependent on or capable of the internal generation of heat; a warm-blooded animal.
Ectotherms
an animal that is dependent on external sources of body heat.
Lateral Line
a visible line along the side of a fish consisting of a series of sense organs which detect pressure and vibration.
Gills
the paired respiratory organ of fishes and some amphibians, by which oxygen is extracted from water flowing over surfaces within or attached to the walls of the pharynx.
Jawless Fish (2 examples)
heterostreci Haikouichthys
Cartilaginous Fish
shark stingray
Bony Fishes
walleye large mouth bass small mouth bass
Swim Bladder
a gas-filled sac present in the body of many bony fishes, used to maintain and control buoyancy.
Amphibians
ectothermic, tetrapod vertebrates of the class Amphibia. Modern amphibians are all Lissamphibia. They inhabit a wide variety of habitats, with most species living within terrestrial, fossorial, arboreal or freshwater aquatic ecosystems
Lungs
a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on either side of the chest (thorax).
Tadpole
the larval stage in the life cycle of an amphibian, particularly that of a frog or toad.
Metamorphosis
in an insect or amphibian) the process of transformation from an immature form to an adult form in two or more distinct stages.
Caecilians
a group of limbless, serpentine amphibians. They mostly live hidden in the ground and in stream substrates, making them the least familiar order of amphibians
Salamanders
a group of amphibians typically characterized by a lizard-like appearance, with slender bodies, blunt snouts, short limbs projecting at right angles to the body, and the presence of a tail in both larvae and adults.
Frogs
any member of a diverse and largely carnivorous group of short-bodied, tailless amphibians composing the order Anura.
Toads
a common name for certain frogs, especially of the family Bufonidae, that are characterized by dry, leathery skin, short legs, and large bumps covering the parotoid glands.
Reptiles
are tetrapod animals in the class Reptilia, comprising today’s turtles, crocodilians, snakes, amphisbaenians, lizards, tuatara, and their extinct relatives
Amniotic Eggs
Eggs that can be laid on land
Turtles
diapsids of the order Testudines characterized by a special bony or cartilaginous shell developed from their ribs and acting as a shield.
Tortoises
reptile species of the family Testudinidae of the order Testudines. They are particularly distinguished from other turtles by being land-dwelling, while many other turtle species are at least partly aquatic.
Crocodiles
arge semiaquatic reptiles that live throughout the tropics in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia.
Alligators
a crocodilian in the genus Alligator of the family Alligatoridae. The two living species are the American alligator and the Chinese alligator.
Snakes
elongated, legless, carnivorous reptiles of the suborder Serpentes.
