Q

What is Altitude?

A

Altitude is the height distance measurement commonly in the vertical direction
For every 100m in the air the temperature drops by 1 degree

Q

What is latitude?

A

the distance from the earth’s equator

The further you are from the equator the colder it is

Q

What is continentality?

A

the farther you are away from an ocean or large amount of water, the greater the seasonal temperature change

Q

What is plucking

A

When meltwater at the base of the glacier freezes on the rock surface. As the glacier moves forward it takes pieces of the rock surface.

Q

What is abrasion?

A

Rock fragments in the ice grind against the rock over which the ice is moving and wears away the land. (Like rough sandpaper)

Q

What is freeze thaw?

A

Rainwater collects in a crack
The temperature falls below 0°C.
The water freezes and expands making the crack bigger
After repeating freezing amd thawing the rock breaks off

15
Q

What does a small glacier eventually form?

A

16
Q

Why is the back wall of a corrie very steep?

A

Due to plucking and freeze-thaw weathering

17
Q

How does the glacier move?

A

Under its own weight in a circular way called rotational slip

18
Q

How is the hollow deepened?

A

By plucking and abrasion

19
Q

Why does a lip form at the front of the corrie?

A

There is less erosion at the front of the corrie

20
Q

Once the ice has melted what often forms in the hollow?

A

A tarn
