Size and remoteness makes it inaccessible, it’s rich ore and mineral wealth has led to development of mining iron, silver, copper and gold, alongside coal, oil and gas extraction. Vast forests for timber farming

Iceland has traditionally relied on fishing and whaling industries. Also uses geothermal energy to produce vast amounts of clean electricity; cheap flights with budget airlines have opened the island up to sightseeing and adventure tourists

Extreme climate, protected status lack of pollution and human population, make it suitable for adventure tourism and scientific research

Cold nutrient-rich waters have always been used for fishing. In late 1900’s hundreds of thousands of tonnes of krill and Patagonian toothfish were harvested before international agreements came in to try reduce the impacts.only limited visitor numbers allowed onto Antarctica, cruise ships have become increasingly common in waters around the continent
