What was Reagan’s stance against communism?
He took a hardline stance against communism but he was willing to compromise and negotiate with the USSR
What were Reagan’s military policies in two words?
Agressive and Pressuring
What were Reagan’s military policies?
- Increased military soending by 40%
- Introduced the SDI (Strategic Defense Initiative)
- Deployed Perishing II missiles that countered the Soviet SS-20 missiles
What did his military policies aim to do and what did they consequencesly do?
- They aimed to push the USSR to negotiate terms regarding arms and nuclear weapon reduction
- They strained the USSR’s economy as it forced them to keep up with the US in terms of military spending
What were his Economic policies?
He imposed sanctions which limited the USSRs access to western technology - limiting their industrial development
- Specific: he collaborated with Saudi Arabia to lower their oil prices which reduced Soviet revenu from oil exports which was a critical part of thier economy - hindering their economic growth
What was Reagan’s Foreign Policy?
- He implemented the Reagan Doctrine which aimed at supporting anti-communist movements world-wide to help counter Soviet Influence
What was the aim of the Reagan Doctrine? And what did it aim to do to the USSR?
The aim was to force the USSR to defend its interests in multiple regions
- It aimed to stretch its economic and military resources thin, weaking the USSR further.
How did Reagan shift the course of the Cold War?
In his speech, he labelled the Soviet Union the “Evil Empire” during his speech in 1983 which signalled the end of Détente
What were the different summits and what did they result in?
- Geneva Summit (1985), they met for the first time and agreed that they had to reduce their nuclear arsenal
- Reykjavik Summit (1986) - met again but no fromal agreement was reached but it layed the groundworkfor future negotiations
What was the INF Treaty?
Signed in 1987
- Eliminated all intermediate-range nuclear missiles
- Destroyed over 2,600 missiles
- marked significant de-escalation in the arms race
