Q

anemometer

A

wind speed

  1. open area -> away from obstructions -> e.g. buildings -> wind flows freely
  2. repeat measurement -> average calculated
  3. reading at eye level -> prevent parallex error

Q

wind vane

A

wind direction

  1. open area -> away from obstruction where wind is blowing
  2. hold wind vane away -> above head

1) use a compass and find N pole and position wind vane N pole to compass N pole
2) record direction wind vane points to -> direction whcih wind blows from

Q

wind rose

A

wind direction and frequency

read:
1. rectangle points in direction the wind blows from
2. box represents dates in a month the wind blew in a particular direction (prevailing widn: wind that blow most frequently from a specific direction
3. number in circle represents the number of calm days

to draw:
1. measure wind direction
2. draw a rectangle
3. write date of the month in rectangle

Q

barometer

A

air pressure

  1. check the movable pointer is arrnaged over the measuring and to measure current pressure
  2. determine pressure. measuring hand -> pressure
measuring hand moves to right -> P is rising
measuring moves to left -> P is falling

Q

max and min thermometer

A

temperature

  1. read at eye level -> prevent parallex error
  2. place in a stevenson screen -> kept out of direct sulight -> elevated 1.5m above ground -> bc placing it directly on grounf affects readings -> heat emitted from ground -> higher reading -> inaccurate readings

Q

sling psychrometer

A

relative humidity

  1. dip wick of wet bulb thermometer into water
  2. swing psychrometer at a steady and comfortoble pace
  3. hold it away from body so that it does not pick up body heat
  4. record temp after one min of swinigng
  5. swing again and record again
  6. if both temp are diff, repeat expt
  7. readand record temp on dry thermometer
  8. calc diff in readings
use conversion table to find RH

1) eye level -> prevent parallex error
2) hold it away from body

Q

rain gauge

A
  1. open area -> away from obstruction -> grass patch -> prevnts interception from other objects -> inaccurate readings
  2. protruding 30cm abive ground -> does not topple to prveent spillage + prevnets splashing of water into rain gauge -> loss in rainwater -> inaccurate measruemnets
  3. compare the amount collected with official weather statistics for variations
  4. place at diff locations
  5. transfer into measuring cylinder, read at eye level
