wicked problem
A problem that is difficult or impossible to solve because of incomplete, contradictory, and changing requirements that are often challenging to identify
Social network
is defined as a set of nodes (social actors such as individuals, groups, or organizations) and ties representing some relationship or absence of a relationship among the actors
Actors can be connected via:
- similarities
- social relations
- interactions
- flows of resources
Ties can be:
- Binary
- Valued
- Directed/undirected
State ties
have continuity over time. They are not permanent, but have an open-ended persistence. They can be operationalized in terms of strength, intensity and duration
Event-type ties
has a discrete and transitory nature and can be counted over periods of time. They can be operationalized in terms of frequency and occurrence
Realist
there is a ‘true’ network of relationship out there, and our job as researchers is to discover it.
Nominalist
Every network question that we as researchers ask generates its own network.
The strength of weak ties
Weak ties are likely to be the source of novel information. Weak ties are likely bridges.
The stronger the tie between two people, the more likely their social world will overlap, so they do not have novel information
