Q
  1. Principle of Conservation of Momentum
A

Total momentum is constant or conserved for a closed system or provided there are no external forces. Initial momentum = Final momentum.
pINITIAL = pFINAL. m1u1 + m2u2 = m1v1 + m2v2.

Q
  1. Perfectly Elastic Collision
A

No loss of kinetic energy during the collision. Note total energy and momentum are always conserved.
1⁄2m u 2 + 1⁄2m u 2 = 1⁄2m v 2 + 1⁄2m v 2 + E; E = 0.

Q
  1. Inelastic Collision
A

Some loss of kinetic energy during the collision. Note total energy and momentum are always conserved. 1⁄2m u 2 + 1⁄2m u 2 = 1⁄2m v 2 + 1⁄2m v 2 + E; E > 0.
