Originally this word depicted the task of the umpire (the βραβεύς … βραβευτής) of “directing” the athletic games and “deciding” the winners of the contest (E. Stauffer, TDNT 1:637–38). Then it came to have more general applications—to be arbiter, give a verdict, preside, rule (= “be the decisive factor,” BDAG 183b), control, or hold sway.
