3 qualities of colour
Hue, value, intensity
Primary colours
Red, yellow, blue
Secondary Colours
Red and yellow make orange, yellow and blue make green, blue and red make purple.
Tertiary colours
Red orange, yellow orange, yellow green, blue green, blue purple, red purple.
How do you obtain tertiary colours
Created by mixing a primary and secondary
Colour schemes
An arrangement of colours that is pleasing to the eye
Complementary colours
Colours that are opposite on the colour wheel and provide high contrast
Examples of complementary colours are
Yellow and purple, red and green, blue and orange
Monochromatic
Is made up of one colour and it’s shades and tints. Hue- the name given to a pure colour (hue is a colours name)
Example of monochromatic
The main colour in middle and to the right it gets darker by adding black and to the left it gets lighter by adding white.
Split-complementary
Is made up of three Hues. First you choose your main colour and then select the two colours on either side of its complement
Example of split complementary
Three boxes first colour is yellow then red purple then purple blue. Second example is green then orange then orange then purple.
Triadic
Colours are evenly spaced apart on the colour wheel creating an equilateral triangle
Example of triadic
A circle with three triangles in it with the primary colours (red yellow blue)
What are ex of neutral colours
White grey black
Analogous
Colours are next to each other on the colour wheel
Ex of analogous
A triangle with 3 spaces in it, on ex is purple green blue, second is red orange yellow, third is green yellow orange
What is value
The lightness or darkness of a colour
What is shade
Black is added to create a dark colour
What is tint
White is added to create light colour
Cool colours
Green blue purple (found on left side)
Warm colours
Red orange yellow (found on right)
The colour wheel
A circular arrangement which shows the relationship of colour
Emotional qualities of Colour
Red- evil, anger, fire, heat, sexy
Blue- calm, soothing, cool, sadness, depression
Yellow- cheery, warmth, light, embodies
Purple- royalty or wealth
Green- envy, signifies hope or life, cool and restful colours or nature
White- purity, truth, innocence, light
