Combat Service Support Flashcards

1
Q

What are the levels of maintenance?

A

Field Level Maintenance: any maintenance that does not require depot maintenance capability and is performed by equipment crew and equipment operators and mechanics/ technicians within Marine Corps organizations and activities, and/or by approved commercial/contract sources
Depot Level Maintenance: not defined by location. Equipment requiring depot-level maintenance typically requires a major overhaul or rebuild.

Q

What are the (4) phases of maintenance action? Hint: AE-AM

A

Acceptance of Equipment: consists of an acceptance inspection, scheduling, and assignment.

Equipment Induction: the physical commitment of a maintenance service request and associated equipment to a specific maintenance section.

Active Maintenance: Maintenance activity performed following equipment induction into a maintenance section
* Inspection of equipment
* Prep for maintenance actions
* Quality control
* Performance of maintenance
* Cleanup of maintenance area

Maintenance Closeout: Commences when the equipment has been repaired and the serviceable item is returned to the owner or when a decision has been made to evacuate or dispose of the equipment

Q

What are the (2) categories of field level maintenance?

A

Organizational: conducted by equipment operators, crews and unit equipment technicians at the using unit level

Intermediate: typically occurs at units task-organized to provide specialized maintenance support.

NOTE: Marine commanders in any unit may direct the conduct of either organizational or intermediate category maintenance tasks if their unit has the trained personnel and equipment the task requires on hand.

Q

What are the (10) classes of supply?

A

Class I Planning: Subsistence
* MREs (can be sole source of subsistence for up to 21 days), First Strike (sole subsistence for 72 hours), UGR-H&S(heat & serves) (requires food service personnel, feeds 50 – complete 3 box module), UGR-A (requires food service personnel, feeds 50 – complete 3 box module, semi-perishable and requires refrigeration capabilities)(Plan for resupply into your SOM)

Class II Planning: Clothing, individual equipment, tools, administration supplies (Plan battery resupply into your SOM)

Class III Planning: Petroleum, oils, lubricants

Class IV Planning: Construction Material, Heavy equipment utilized for construction

Class V Planning: Ammunition
* Plan for ammo 90+ days out)
* Steps: Forecast, request, draw, deliver, expend, return
* Real-world constraints, limitations, allocations, and effects (You can’t always get what you want, but you will get what you need)

Class VI Planning: Personal Demand items; PX/MCCS type items

Class VII Planning: Major end items like racks, pylons, tracked vehicles, etc.

Class VIII Planning: Medical supplies

Class IX Planning: Repair parts

Class X Planning: Material for nonmilitary programs
* Agriculture and economic development (not included in classes I through IX) sometimes referred to as civil affairs

Q

What are the (6) functions of tactical level logistics? Hint: SMT-GHS

A

Supply: a cyclic process of acquiring and issuing materiel to supported units
* Storage, procurement, distribution, salvage, disposal

Maintenance: involves those actions taken to keep materiel in serviceable condition (preventive maintenance) and actions required to return materiel to serviceable condition (corrective maintenance)
* Inspection and classification, servicing and repair, modification, rebuilding and overhaul, reclamation, recovery and evacuation

Transportation: moving from one location to another using railways, highways, waterways, pipelines, oceans, and airways
* Embarkation and landing support, port and terminal ops, motor transport, aerial delivery, freight and passenger transportation, material handling equipment

General Engineering: distinct from combat engineering and is usually considered a CSS function
* Engineer recon, bridging, horizontal/vertical construction, facilities maintenance, demo/obstacle removal, EOD disposal, receive/store/distribute fuel, water production and storage, power generation and distribution

Health Services Support: seeks to minimize the effect that wounds, injuries and disease have on unit effectiveness and morale
* Casualty management, force health protection and prevention, medical logistics, medical command and control, medical stability ops

Services: Provides for the effective administration, management, and employment of military organizations
* Command: Personnel admin, religious ministries support, financial management, communications, billeting, food service and subsistence support, band, morale/welfare/recreation
* CSS: Disbursing, postal, MCCS exchange services, security, legal services, civil affairs, mortuary affairs, contracting

Q

Define Logistics

A

Logistics encompasses all actions required to move and maintain forces. This includes the ** acquisition and positioning of resources** as well as the delivery of those resources. (MCDP-4)

Q

Define Combat Service Support

A

Combat service support is the activity, which actually provides services and supplies to the combat forces. (MCDP-4) Since many CSS activities are conducted within the tactical-level of logistics, the two terms are commonly used interchangeably in the operating forces.**

Q

Strategic Logistics vs Operational Logistics vs Tactical Logistics

A

Strategic logistics supports the organizing, training and equipping of forces needed to further the national interest.
* Facilities; Procurement; Mobilization; Material readiness; Deployment and support; Strategic airlift and sealift; Force recognition

Operational logistics links tactical requirements and strategic capabilities to accomplish operational goals and objectives.
* Gateway between strategic capabilities and tactical requirements, Arrival and assembly, Intratheater lift, Theater distribution, Sustainment, Reconstitution and redeployment

Tactical logistics includes organic unit capabilities and combat service support activities required to support military operations. (MCW P 4-11)
* Supply, maintenance, transportation, general engineering, health services, services

Q

What are the (7) Principles of Logistics Support? Hint: SERF-ASS

A

Simplicity
* Fosters efficiency in planning and execution
* Standardized procedures (SOP)
* Established priorities and pre-allocations

Economy
* Employing the minimum resources required (within the acceptable level of risk)
* Efficiency vs Effectiveness

Responsiveness
* Right support, right place, right time (keystone principle)
* Maintain tempo to prevent exhaustion
* Enabled through monitoring – LOGSTATs
* Push vs Pull

Flexibility
* Adapt to unexpected situations or evolving situations
* Anticipate requirements
* Minimizes potential friction of oversights, shortfalls, or unforeseen circumstances

Attainability
* Minimum essential levels to get started
* Mitigating resource shortfalls

Sustainability
* Duration
* Stockage levels
* Readiness

Survivability
* Protect the force and its resources while deceiving the enemy
* Ability to avoid or withstand hostile actions or environmental conditions
* Tactics – analyze threat in relation to logistic support, dispersion, deception, and signature
