Q

A

Involves possibly private or public acceptance. There is a membership which is desirable towards the individual therefore they would adjust there behaviour and beliefs.Once the group is no longer seen as valuable they possibly revert back.

Q

Explain Asch’s Research.

A

-Group would be 7-9
-participant would be in the middle
-told to match standard line to comparison line
-confederates would purposefully get it wrong
-task was unambiguious

Q

What can be concluded by Asch’s research?

A

Q

What did Neto (1995) say about women which weakens the researchs external validity?

A

More women are conformist as they care more about social relationships and to be liked by peers.NSI is only a explanation for certain group(females).

16
Q

Explain the effect of Group size on conformity using Asch variation of the study.

A

-As the majority group increases conformity rate increases.
-When 3 confederates gave the wrong answer conformity increased to 32%,this then plateud.
-In conclusion size of majority does have an effect on conformity but this is to a point.

17
Q

Explain the effect of Unanimity on conformity using Asch variation of the study.

A

-Means complete agreement among the group
-Confederates all give the wrong answer conformity was at 37%
-One confederate gives the correct answer conformity dropped by 5.5%
-‘Lone’ confederate conformity dropped by 9%
-Conclusion is that if there is a dissenter which breaks the unanimity conformity decreases.

18
Q

Explain the effect of Task difficulty on conformity using Asch variation of the study.

A

-As task difficulty increases conformity also increases.
-Asch made the stimulus line and the comparison line more similar in length, led to ISI
-when the right answer was less obvious we lose confidence.
