Comm Systems Flashcards
(35 cards)
Define Full Duplex
Communications in both directions at the same time
What is a SMTP Server
Used to send email messages to client application. Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
What is a MAC address
A unique address hardwired into network devices
Define Stop Bit
A bit at the end of a character the signals the end of transmission of a character to the receiving computer
Define Asynchronous
a form of start/stop data transmission
What is a repeater
Any network hardware device that receives a signal, amplifies it then transmits the amplified signal across the network.
What is Encryption
a process applied to data to as a security measure to prevent unauthorised access.
Define Bandwidth
The maximum data transfer rate of a network or internet connection, measured in Mb/s
What is Ring Topology
Communications in a continuous circle with nodes represented as points on the circumference.
What is a POP Server
Used to receive email messages from client applications. Post Office Protocol
define bps
bps- measured in bits/sec used for data speed
define baud rate
The baud rate is the rate at which information is transferred in a communication channel.
define parity checking method
parity checking counts the number of binary values
define checksum method
checksum is all bytes added together on the receiving end as well as the transmit end, the total is transmitted as binary. An error will occur if totals don’t match
define Cyclic Redundancy Check
CRCs are able to detect more errors than checksums and most of the common types of transmission errors
Define teleconferencing
the use of telecommunication devices to hold discussions between participants in different locations.
define telephone system
a communication system that transmits sound between distant points
define email
messages distributed by electronic means from one computer user to one or more recipients via a network.
define e-commerce
commercial transactions conducted electronically on the Internet.
define scalability
the capacity to be changed in size or scale.
Explain star topology
all nodes of a network are connected to a single, central hub
Define peer to peer
denoting or relating to networks in which each computer can act as a server for the others
define CSMA/CD
arrier sense multiple access/collision detection, CSMA/CD is a media access control MAC protocol
HTTP?
hyper text transfer protocol
