Bill
A proposal for new law or a change to an existing law that is presented for debate and approval in Parliament.
Government
The group of people responsible for making and enforcing laws, usually headed by the Prime Minister or President.
Law
A system of rules created by the government to regulate behavior and maintain order in society.
Minister
A government official responsible for a specific area, such as health or education, within the government.
Democracy
A system of government where the people elect representatives to make decisions on their behalf.
Election
A process in which citizens vote to choose their representatives in government.
Commonwealth of Australia
The federal government of Australia, responsible for national-level lawmaking and administration.
Petition
A formal request, often signed by many people, asking the government to take specific action.

A member of the Senate, the upper house of Parliament in Australia.

A person who runs for election to a political office.

The leader of the largest political party not in government, who leads the opposition to government policies.

The upper house of the Australian Parliament, consisting of Senators who represent states and territories.
Budget
The government’s plan for how it will spend public money on various services and projects.
Council
A local government body that makes decisions about community services and policies.
Amendment
A change or addition to a law or legal document.
Legislative Assembly
The lower house in some state parliaments in Australia, where laws are proposed and debated.
Opposition
The political party or parties not in power, which challenge the government’s policies.
