Q

What are the properties of plywood?

A
  • Constructed of layers of veneer glued at 90º to each other, making it very strong and tough.
  • Available for structure, exterior, interior and marine work.
  • High strength:weight ratio.
  • Relatively stable under changes in temperature and moisture.
  • Cuts relatively easily but can splinter.

Q

What are the properties of flexible plywood?

A
  • Designed to make curved parts.
  • Made by gluing three layers of veneer with the grain running the same way. The middle veneer is extra thin.
  • Called ‘flexi-ply’ or ‘bendy plywood’.
  • It is easier to cut the regular plywood but can splinter easily.

Q

What are the properties of blockboard?

A
  • Similar to plywood but the central layer is made from strips of timber
  • Good resistance to warping
  • Relatively easy to cut and finish
  • Edges are difficult to clean up so softwood edging strips are often used

Q

What are the properties of chipboard?

A
  • Also known as ‘particle board’.
  • Made from wood chips and shavings glued/pressed together
  • Usually veneered or covered in plastic laminate
  • Easy to cut but edges need covering
  • Lightweight and weak
  • Prone to expansion when exposed to moisture where a moisture-resistant version can be needed
