Common Manufactured Boards Flashcards
(15 cards)
1
Q
What are the properties of plywood?
A
- Constructed of layers of veneer glued at 90º to each other, making it very strong and tough.
- Available for structure, exterior, interior and marine work.
- High strength:weight ratio.
- Relatively stable under changes in temperature and moisture.
- Cuts relatively easily but can splinter.
2
Q
What are the uses of plywood?
A
- Strong structural panelling board used in building construction
- Furniture-making
3
Q
What are the properties of flexible plywood?
A
- Designed to make curved parts.
- Made by gluing three layers of veneer with the grain running the same way. The middle veneer is extra thin.
- Called ‘flexi-ply’ or ‘bendy plywood’.
- It is easier to cut the regular plywood but can splinter easily.
4
Q
What are the uses of flexible plywood?
A
- Curved furniture
- Bespoke shopfittings
5
Q
What are the properties of marine ply?
A
- Moisture-resistant form of plywood
6
Q
What are the uses of marine ply?
A
- Boat building
- Decking
7
Q
What are the properties of MDF?
A
- Easily machined and painted or stained
- Smooth, even surface
- Available in water and fire-resistant forms
8
Q
What are the uses of MDF?
A
- Furniture and interior panelling due to its easy machine qualities
- Often veneered or painted
9
Q
What are the properties of moisture-resistant MDF?
A
- A version of MDF that is resistant to moisture
- Often coloured green
10
Q
What are the uses of moisture-resistant MDF?
A
- Used in areas where moisture is prone, such as kitchens and bathrooms
11
Q
What are the properties of flame-resistant MDF?
A
- A version of MDF that is resistant to fire
- Usually coloured pink or blue
12
Q
What are the uses of fire-resistant MDF?
A
- Used in the building industry where there is an average risk of fire
13
Q
What are the properties of blockboard?
A
- Similar to plywood but the central layer is made from strips of timber
- Good resistance to warping
- Relatively easy to cut and finish
- Edges are difficult to clean up so softwood edging strips are often used
14
Q
What are the uses of blockboard?
A
- Used where heavier, stronger structures are needed
- Common for shelving and worktops
15
Q
What are the properties of chipboard?
A
- Also known as ‘particle board’.
- Made from wood chips and shavings glued/pressed together
- Usually veneered or covered in plastic laminate
- Easy to cut but edges need covering
- Lightweight and weak
- Prone to expansion when exposed to moisture where a moisture-resistant version can be needed
