Midazolam
Class: benzodiazepine
Action: Binds to GABAA –> potentiates the effect of GABA induced chloride conductance –> hyperpolarization of the postsynaptic membrane (increased inhibitory postsynaptic potential) –> decreased neurotransmission
Timing: Varies according to indication
How to use: SC or IV infusion
Length of time: depends on indication
Effects: 1-2min, wears off after 90-120min
Tests: None
Important side-effects: Drowsiness, impair judgement and increase reaction time
Contraindications: CNS depression; compromised airway; severe respiratory depression
Patient information: may cause “hangover” effect, don’t drive for next 24hrs or operate heavy machinery
Don’t combine with alcohol (depressant)
