Define community engagement
It is the process of enabling citizens to be involved in policing at their chosen level.
What is the police responsibility
They have a responsibility to enable communities to participate in policing decisions and activities
What are the main distinctions forces make on communities
That they can be defined by place (geographical areas that people live) and by interest (the characteristics and experiences people share)

Some forces expand of the definition of community by highlighting that people are often members of more than on community or may not identify with any community. Even within recognised communities a lot of diversity exists
What is method one police use to engage with the community
They can increase their local presence and interaction
How can police increase their local presence and interaction
- Have police teams attend high footfall areas or high profile events involving minority groups
- They can use police staff as single points of contact for the community to express themselves
What is method 2 for police to engage with the community
Allow a member of public to accompany a police officer and see what they do on a day-to-day basis.
What is method 3 for police to engage with the community
The police should also work to engage with partners, these could include councils, charities, social housing providers and the wider policing family.
What does the wider policing family include
This includes special constables and PCSO’s. PCSO’s are particularly important in intel gathering as they act as the eyes and ears of the community
List benefits of community engagement
- Increases the public trust in the police, which in turn improves the service delivery the police provide.
- It will also allow police to pin point underlying community issues and act on them accordingly.

It increases police officer job satisfaction and attitude towards the job
