Define The North-South Divide
The North-South divide describes a division between developed, or rich countries and developing, or poor countries. The term was adopted in 1980 by the United Nations to replace the terms ‘First World’ and ‘Third World’.
The North
Consists of wealthy countries in Europe and North America but also includes Australia and New Zealand. Comprises one-fifth of the world’s population but owns 86% of the world’s wealth.
e.g. Ireland, Norway, Japan
The South
Consists of poor countries found in Africa, South America and Asia. Comprises four-fifths of the world’s population but owns only 14% of the world’s wealth.
Child Mortality Rate
The number of children under the age of five who die for every 1,000 children who are born in the same year
Life expectancy
The average number of years a person can expect to live to.
