Competition in Ecosystems Vocabulary Flashcards
(21 cards)
More than one individual or population in an ecosystem that relies upon the same limited resources.
Competition
A self-contained living thing.
Organism
A group of interacting individuals of the same species located in the same area.
Population
A system comprising all the biotic and abiotic factors in an area and all the interactions among them.
Ecosystem
Source or supply from which benefit is produced.
Resources
Living, or produced by living things.
Biotic
Not living, or not produced by living things.
Abiotic
When two or more individuals or populations attempt to obtain a single resource.
Competitive Interaction
When an organism depends on a factor for survival.
Dependent Interaction
An organism that gets its energy by feeding on producers in the food chain.
Primary Consumer
An animal that eats other animals that eats plants.
Secondary Consumer
Something that is needed by organisms and is not infinite in its abundance in the environment ; if it is exhausted , then the organisms that need it cannot survive.
Limited Resources
When individuals of different species live together in a close and long-term relationship.
Symbiosis
The most basic unit in the classification of types of organisms.
Species
The variation of life forms within an ecosystem or across the planet.
Biodiversity
Factors that are living or produced by living things.
Biotic Factors
Nonliving factors that affect the ecosystem; includes light, space, temperature, shelter, water, and soil composition.
Abiotic factors
Simply states which organisms consume each other, and shows how energy moves through living things.
Food Chain
An animal that is hunted and killed for food by a predator.
Prey
A species that kills and eats other organisms for food.
Predator
Relationships between an organism or population and abiotic factors.
