Components of Fitness Flashcards
(21 cards)
Identify Agility (1)
The ability to change direction quickly whilst maintaing speed and control
Identify Balance (1)
The ability to maintain a stable centre of gravity in order to avoid falling
Identify Coordination (1)
The ability to use two or more body parts at the same time
Identify Speed (1)
How quickly an individual can move
Identify Power (1)
The ability to use strength at speed (speed x strength)
Identify Reaction Time (1)
The time between a stimulus and a response
Identify Explosive Strength (1)
The force exerted in one quick muscular contraction (e.g shot putt)
Identify Static Strength (1)
The ability to exert a force against an immovable object (e.g a rugby scrum)
Identify Muscular Endurance (1)
The ability for our muscles to contract continuously without becoming tired
Identify Cardiovascular Endurance (1)
The ability of our heart and lungs to work continuously without getting tired
Identify Dynamic Strength (1)
The ability to create a force repeatedly for for a long period of time (e.g completing reps in weight training)
Identify Flexibility (1)
The range of movement around a joint
Describe why a Midfielder in Football would need Muscular Endurance (2)
A midfielder in football would need muscular endurance because it enables their body to continuously work for 90 minutes. Midfielders’ jobs involve constant movement and use of their leg muscles therefore needing the energy in their muscles to supply it.
Describe why a Gymnast would need Balance (2)
A gymnast would need balance because it is one of their key components of fitness. Gymnastics involves the balance beam which obviously involves balance but mainly muscles in your core and arms.
Justify why Reaction Time is important for a Cricketer (3)
A cricketer needs reaction time because the ball is travelling fast so the batsman will need to react quickly to the stimulus otherwise the ball will beat the bat. The ball may spin off the pitch so the batsman must react to any lateral movement quickly to avoid getting out. A wicket keeper has to respond quickly to a nick off the bat to make a catch
What does the Handgrip Dynamometer measure test (1)
Strength
What does the Sit and Reach Test measure (1)
Flexibility
What does the Sit up Test measure (1)
Muscular Endurance
What does the Vertical Jump Test measure (1)
Power
Why do we carry out fitness testing? (1 per answer)
Base lines Plan a specific training programme Variety to the training programme Compare against National Averages Monitor improvements Allows you to adapt training programme
What are the limitations of fitness testing? (1 per answer)
Not sport specific
Require validity
Do not replicate movements of the activity
Do not replicate sporting conditions
Not direct measurement therefore inaccurate
