Composites Flashcards
Is a multiphased material that is artificially made. The constituents must be chemically dissimilar and must be separated by an interface.
Composites
How many phases does a composite have? Enumerate
There are two: Matrix and Dispersed Phase
Two types of Composites in Construction
- Composite type based on Matrix Constituents
- Composite type based on Matrix Constituent Forms
Consists of various short and continuous fibers which are held together by an organic polymer matrix
Polymer Matrix Composites
Its main function is to transfer loads between fibers through the matrix
Polymer Matrix Composites
It is usually made of aluminum. It is a material in which silicone carbide, continuous carbon or ceramic fibers are embedded in a metallic matrix material
Metal Matrix Composite
Materials consisting of a ceramic or carbon fiber surrounded by a ceramic or carbon fiber surrounded by a ceramic matrix
Ceramic Matrix Composite
Agent that redistribute the loads
Matrix
Composed of hard particle constituents in a softer matrix in an arbitrary order
Particulate Reinforced Composite
Produced by blending of the matrix and thin flakes
Flakes Composites
Composed of strong and stiff fibers which are held together by a matrix
Fiber reinforced Composite
Made from bonded elementary layers which are composites themselves
Laminated Composites
Applications of Composites
Aerospace, spacecraft, Manufacturing yachts, boats, cruise ships
Classification of composites by their Uses
Geotextiles, Filters, Sorbents, Structural Composites, Non-structural Composites, molded products, Packaging
Permeable fabric which used in association with soil. It has the ability to separate, filter, reinforce, protect or drain.
Geotextiles
Medium and High density mats which can be used for filtering.
Air filters
Used to remove heavy metals and pesticides and oil. They removes dyes, traces of chemicals in solvents and in the purification of solvents
Sorbents
Defined as one that is required to carry load in use.
Structural Composite
Not intended to carry a load in use. Can be made from thermoplastics, textile and wood particles.
Non-structural Composites
These are wood flat sheets that are cut into pieces and glued to make shaped products
Molded Products
Made from jute that is used for sacking for products
Gunny Bags
