Compostion Of The Atmosphere Flashcards
(40 cards)
What is the atmosphere
The layer of gasses surrounding the Earth surface
What are the main gases in the atmosphere?
Nitrogen, Oxygen, Argon, and Carbon Dioxide
What percentage of the atmosphere is Nitrogen (N₂)?
Approximately 78%.
What percentage of the atmosphere is Oxygen (O₂)?
21%
What percentage of the atmosphere is Argon (Ar)?
0,09%
What are trace gases?
Gases that make up a very small part of the atmosphere
Why is Nitrogen important in the atmosphere?
It is important for plant growth
Why is Oxygen important in the atmosphere
It is essential for respiration in animals and humans.
What role does Carbon Dioxide play in the atmosphere?
It is used by plants in photosynthesis and helps trap heat (greenhouse gas).
What is the role of water vapor in the atmosphere?
Important for climatic processes such as rainfall and forms clouds and precipitation
What happens if the balance of gases in the atmosphere changes?
It can lead to climate change, global warming, and breathing difficulties.
What is the structure of the atmosphere based on?
The temperature changes with altitude.
What are the four main layers of the atmosphere (from lowest to highest)?
Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere.
What is the Troposphere?
The lowest layer (0–10 km); where weather occurs and most life exists.Highest amount of oxygen and water vapor.Temperature decreases with altitude
What separates the troposphere by the stratosphere
Tropopause
What is the Stratosphere?
The second layer (10–50 km); contains the ozone layer.
What is the importance of stratosphere
Airplanes fly in this layer, airplanes uses winds in this layer to pick up speed
What happens to temperature in the Stratosphere?
It increases with height due to ozone absorbing sunlight.
What is the Mesosphere?
The third layer (50–80 km); where meteors burn up.
What is the importance of mesosphere
Prevents rocks from space entering the lowering atmosphere
What happens to temperature in the Mesosphere?
It decreases with height; it’s the coldest layer.(-80)
What is the Thermosphere?
The fourth layer extends from 80km to merge the space; where auroras occur and satellites orbit.
What happens to temperature in the Thermosphere?
It increases with height; temperatures can get very hot due to solar radiation.
