Compounds Flashcards
(35 cards)
What is a compound
A substance with two or more elements, whose atoms are chemically combined and in a fixed proportion
If 2 elements are present the name becomes…
The name of the second element is changed to a end in “-ide”
Examples if 2 elements are present: Sulfur, Carbon, Chlorine, Oxygen
Sulfur- Sulfide
Carbon- Carbide
Chlorine- Chloride
Oxygen- Oxide
If the compound contains a metal, hydrogen and oxygen ONLY then it becomes a metal hydroxide. So what does
Sodium hydrogen and oxygen become?
Sodium = sodium
Hydrogen = hydride
Oxygen = ox
= Sodium hydroxide
If the compound contains a metal, oxygen and any other element that is not hydrogen the name of the second element is changed to end in “-ate”
