Molecular comp.

1. Non metals
2. the element further to the right and top of PT IS NAMED SECOND with suffix IDE
3. Prefixes are included to indicate how many atoms present of each element present

16

Ionic compounds/ Salts

Consists of metal or ammonium
2. Cation combined with a non metal anion
3. named with cation first and the nm anion 2nd with suffix IDE

17

Examples of ionic compounds

1. NaCl: sodium chloride
2. CaO: calcium oxide
3. AlBr,3: aluminium bromide
4NH,4Cl: ammonium chloride

18

What is charge of ionic compounds

THEY ARE NEAUTRAL so the total charge from the cations and anions must be zero

Eg. Al3+ + 3Br- =ZERO CHARGE

19

How are ionic compounds containing polyatomic anions named?

With cation first followed by name of anion
Na2CO3 : sodium carbonate
NaNO3: sodium nitrate
NaNO2:sodium nitrate
