Compromise Between Rate Of Reaction And Product Yield Flashcards
(4 cards)
Compromise made when reaction is exothermic
-low temperature increases yield at equilibrium as favours exothermic reaction
-high temperature increases rate of reaction meaning more product made in shorter amount of time but is expensive to burn fuel to increase temp (increases energy costs)
-compromise must be made that maximises yield while maintaining high rate, can use a catalyst to increase rate further
Two factors to take into account in industrial processes
-yield of product
-rate of reaction
Why would product be removed from equilibrium before reaches maximum concentration
The equilibrium position will shift to the right
-removal of product decreases rate of back reaction
-time to reach equilibrium may be too long
-unreacted reactants can be recycled
Reason for not increasing pressure
Increases construction and running costs
