CAD
Computer Aided Design
CADD
Computer Aided Design and Drafting
Concurrent Engineering
a method of designing and developing products, in which the different stages run simultaneously, rather than consecutively.
CIM
Computer integrated manufacturing- approach of using computers to control the entire process
CNC
Computer Numerical control- Use of computers to control machine tools e.g. lathes
PPC
Production planning and control- Use if ICT in different aspects of production planning and control e.g. materials ordering, Quality Control
CAA
Computer Aided Administration- Personnel, marketing, sales, ordering, stock control
JIT
Where companies only buy enough stock or materials used for immediate use
Assembly Line
A series of workers and machines in a factory by which a succession of identical items are progressively assembled
Build Quality
The general quality of construction, design etc of a product, how well its built e.g. reliability, sturdiness, fit and finish.
Cell Production
Splits the mass production line into a number of units, each team or cell is responsible for a significant part of a finished product.
Progressive Bundle
Bundles of garment parts are moved in a sequence from one sewing machine operator to another. Each performs a single operation.
Component
To reduce costs, machinery companies do not manufacture all of their components for their products, they buy standardised parts or part assembled components to be assembled on site to create the final product
Craft Production
A method of manufacturing by hand without automation.
Global manufacturing
A company that manufactures components, sub-assemblies, assemblies and finished products for another company by leveraging raw materials , manufacturing capabilities, cost and an efficient supply chain that spreads across the world
Lead Time
The latency(delay) between the initiation and execution of a process.
LEAN Production
An approach to management that focuses on cutting out waste , whilst ensuring quality. This approach can be applied to all aspects of business
What are the scales of production
One off production
Batch production
Mass production
Continuous production
