What is a network?
A collection of two or more computers or computing devices that are connected and can communicate
What are examples of networks?
Cell phone networks, banking networks, Telecom network, business networks, I’ll school network, the Internet.

What are two main advantages of networks?
Easy, fast communication and sharing of resources
What are disadvantages of networks?
Network administrator with network enterprise is needed, network is down or server crashes no one can work and security
What is peer to peer networking?
Consists of less than 10 computers connected together using a hub
What is a client-server network?
Has a main computer. One computer is more important than the other
What is a server?
A centralised computer, that stores all files that the teacher wants to share. It has more RAM, CPU and a bigger HDD. It needs a special network operating software
What is a switch?
Connects all computers so that communication between them is strong
What is a ADSL modem?
It connects local network to Internet
What is NIC
It is a network interface card/controller. It allows computers to communicate
What is a network operating system?
It allows an network connection.
How are all devices connected?
The communication media – I can be wired or wireless
What is wired
It uses cables. It runs so ceilings and downloads in white trunking.
What are two types of wired cables?
Copper cabling called UTP (unshielded twisted pair)
Fibre optic cables use light (optical) transmission
What are wireless cables?
All devices on a wireless network need to be Wi-Fi in a world and able to communicate with a Router
What is cellular connection?
Using a cell phone network such as MTN, Vodacom, cell C ect
What are the differences between Wi-Fi and cellular?
Wifi - A wireless card is needed, software. No I SP needed. It is fast if closed near the Rueter. It is three in public areas and there is A limit on data. Public is usually not safe
Data - must be on a smart phone, needs to be a client of a network company. Depends on the area for speed. It is expensive. It is more secure than Wi-Fi.
What are communication protocols?
These are the rules of communication different countries have different protocols. Some of which are considered to be good etiquette. General protocol for use of the Internet is TCP/IP
What does FTP stand for?
It is used for transferring files. File transfer protocol
What does SMTP mean?
Used for emails. It is simple mail transfer protocol
