Concentration + Salts Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is concentration
The mass of a solute in a certain volume of solvent
how many cm in a dm?
1000cm3 = 1dm3
What do all acids contain?
hydrogen
Name the 3 acids and the formula?
Hydrochloric acid = HCl
Nitric acid = HNO3
Sulfuric acid = H2SO4
Whats the difference between alkali and base
Alkali is a soluble base
Base is a insoluble alkali
Name an example of an alkali and a base
alkali - lithium HYDROXIDE
base - calcium oxide
Acid + alkali -> _______ + _____
salt and water
hydrochloric acid + copper oxide ->
nitric acid + sodium hydroxide
->
sulphuric acid + copper oxide
copper chloride + water
sodium nitrate + water
copper sulfate + water
Outline steps to crystillsation practical
- Add 40cm3 of sulphuric acid to a beaker
- Warm this beaker using a bunsen burner (to speed up reaction)
- After warming the acid up, add in copper oxide and stir until it is in excess (to ensure it has all reacted)
- Using a filter funnel and paper, filter the solution to get rid of the excess copper oxide into a conical flask
- Pour the solution into an evaporating dish
- Fill up a beaker with around 150ml of water
- Place the evaporating dish on top of the beaker and heat up the beaker using a bunsen burner UNTIL COPPER SULPHATE HAS HALVED
- Leave the dish to crystallise
complete the general word equations
- metal + acid ->
- metal oxide + acid ->
- metal hydroxide + acid ->
- metal carbonate + acid ->
- salt + hydrogen
- salt + water
- salt + water
- salt + water + carbon dioxide
Definition of soluble
a solute that dissolves in a solvent
