Concepts Flashcards
(23 cards)
When two objects are in contact and moving relative to one another.
Kinetic friction
When two objects are in contact and stationary.
Static friction
The force resisting the motion when a body rolls on a surface.
Rolling friction.
Any net force causing uniform circular motion.
Centripetal force
First condition of equilibrium.
Net external force on the system must be zero.
Second condition of equilibrium.
Net external torque on a system must be zero.
Stable equilibrium.
When displaced from equilibrium, experiences a net force or torque in a direction opposite the direction of the displacement
Unstable equilibrium
When displaced from equilibrium, experiences a net force or torque in the same direction as the displacement.
Neutral equilibrium
Independent of displacements from its original position
Pascal’s principle
A change in pressure applied to an enclosed fluid is transmitted undiminished to all portions of the fluid and to the walls of its container
Archimedes’ principle
The buoyant force on an object equals the weight of the fluid it displaces.
Thermal equilibrium
Any two systems placed in thermal contact will reach the same temperature.
Zeroth law
If two systems are in thermal equilibrium and the second is in thermal equilibrium with another system, the the first is also in equilibrium with the third.
First law of thermodynamics
U=Q-W
Second law of thermodynamics
Heat transfers spontaneously from higher to lower temperatures, but never spontaneously in the reverse direction.
Entropy
A measure of how much energy is not available to do work
Third law of thermodynamics
The entropy of a pure, perfect crystal is zero at zero Kelvin.
What formula is used to find electrostatic force?
Coulomb’s law
Gauss’s law
The electric flux through ay enclosed surface is proportional to the enclosed electric charge.
What must the forces add up to for the system to be moving at a constant velocity?
Zero
What is the direction of E if the point charge is positive?
Away from the point charge.
What is the direction of E if the point charge is negative?
Toward the point charge.
When two charges a separate, what formula do you use to find the potential energy?
Coulomb’s law
