What does equality mean?
to ensure that a person is treated fairly, given the same opportunities regardless of differences and treated to their individual needs
What does promoting equality mean?
that individuals are not discriminated against due to their differences, such as gender, race, age or disability.
What is diversity?
recognising and respecting individual differences.
Examples of individual differences include differences in faith, beliefs, race, customs and sexuality.
What does valuing diversity mean?
accepting and respecting differences by seeing everyone as a unique individual
What is the benefit of staff understanding diversity in care settings for individuals?
empowerment, independence, inclusion, respect, dignity, equal opportunity and participation.
What does empowerment mean?
care workers enabling and supporting individuals to be in control of their lives
What does independence mean?
not relying on others, and having the freedom to make your own decisions
What does inclusion mean?
ways of working that provide individuals with equal opportunities so that they are involved and feel they belong
What does respect mean?
having regard for the feelings, wishes or rights of others
What does dignity mean?
care that promotes and does not undermine a person’s self-respect
What are rights?
what everyone is to entitled to and they are set out by legislation such as the Equality Act 2010
What does the right of choice mean for individuals?
gives individuals control over their lives and increases self-esteem because it promotes independence and empowerment
What does the right of confidentiality mean for individuals?
means that private information should be shared only with individuals who are directly involved with an individuals care?
What does the right of protection from abuse and harm mean for individuals?
care settings and practitioners should have safeguarding procedures and safety measures in place and should follow health and safety legislation
What does the right of equal and fair treatment mean for individuals?
individuals working in or using health, social care or child care services should be treated within the law and according to their needs
What does the right of consultation mean for individuals?
individuals using health, social care or child care services should be asked for their opinions and views about their care and treatment; this should inform the care they recieve
What does the right to life mean for individuals?
an individual’s life is protected by human rights law; everyone’s right to life should be valued and respected
What is legislation?
a collection of laws passed by Parliament, which state the rights and entitlements of the individual.
