CONCEPTS W5 Flashcards
Medical geography
Studies that quantify the occurrence of disease within a population over time and across space
Jacques May
Social - Negative, those in certain areas further removed from accessing what they need to have social mobility - poor housing, long distance from schools etc
Health - Negative, those in certain areas have easier access to negatively impacting areas such as liquor and fast food and further distance for positive health impacting things such as supermarkets, gyms and nature
Conventional view of geography of health
Relationship between health & place, influence of health services. It is more upstream
- geographical locations/boundaries
- Separated by physical distance
- Resident local communities
Relational view of geography of health
Relationship between health and place, influence of health services. It is more upstream
- Nodes in networks/multiscale
- Separated by socio-relational distance
- Populations of mobile individuals
Geographical inequities
Inequalities that stem from injustice where the spatial distribution of resources does not reflect the need for those resources
Social - bad, distribution of resources could include access to education and safe work places, as well as good housing
Health - Bad, access to health care is not evenly distributed so people cannot access it, access to health demoting services is easy
