Concussion
A brain injury that occurs when the brain is forced to move rapidly within the skull
Cranium
The part of the skull that encloses the brain
Coup
A bruise to the brain that occurs at the site of a direct blow to the head
Contrecoup
A traumatic brain injury that occurs on the opposite side of the brain from where the head was struck
Amnesia
The loss of memory, which can be partial or total. It can be temporary or permanent, but is usually temporary
Photophobia
A condition in which the eyes are more sensitive than normal to light
Phonophobia
A persistent, abnormal, and unwarranted fear of sound
Tinnitus
The perception of sound when there is no external source(Constant ringing in your ears)

LOC
Level of Conscience; refers to a patient’s awareness, alertness, and ability to respond to stimuli
Retrograde Amnesia
A neurological condition that causes people to be unable to recall events or information that happened before the onset of the amnesia
Anterograde Amnesia
A type of memory loss that occurs when you can’t form new memories
Battle Sign
Bruising behind the ear, or over the mastoid process of the skull, that’s usually caused by head trauma
Epidural Hematoma
A collection of blood that forms between your skull and the dura mater, the outermost protective membrane covering your brain
Glasgow coma scale
A medical measurement of a patient’s level of consciousness after a brain injury
Q - collar
Applies light pressure to the jugular veins. This pressure causes a slight increase of blood volume inside the head and helps reduce the brain’s movement upon impact, which is the primary cause of brain injury.
