Cranium
the skull, or the bones that form the head and protect the brain
Concussion
a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that occurs when the brain is jolted or hit, causing it to move rapidly within the skull
Coup
occurs when the head strikes an object or surface
Contrecoup
traumatic brain injury that occurs on the opposite side of the brain from the site of impact
Signs of Concussion
stumbling, vomiting
Symptoms of Concussion
Dizziness, fatigue
Photophobia
fear of light
Phonophobia
fear of sound
Tinnitus
Hearing sound that no one else can
LOC
Loss of Conciousness
Retrograde amnesia
Loss of memory
Battle Sign
bruising behind the ear, or over the mastoid process, that occurs after a head injury
Epidural Hematoma
blood collects between the skull and the dura mater, the thick membrane that covers the brain
Glasgaw Coma Scale
neurological tool used to measure a patient’s level of consciousness after a brain injury or other trauma
Q collar
slows down blood flow to the head to create air bag for the brain
