conduction and convection Flashcards
definition of conduction
When the thermal energy is transferred from one place to another due to collisions between particles.
What is the best conductor and why?
Metals because the electrons are closer together and therefore collide more frequently. Also due to free electrons.
In hot objects (solids) particles are…?
Vibrating with a large amplitude.
In hot objects (liquids and gases) particles are…?
Moving quickly.
Where does convection occur?
In liquids and gases (never solids)
Why are radiators located on the floor, not the ceiling?
Because hot air rises, so if they were on the ceiling, then the ceiling would be hot but the rest of the room would stay cold.
What does air do when it cools?
contracts and becomes more dense (sinks)
What does air do when it’s heated?
expands and becomes less dense (rises)
