Conduction, Convection & Radiation Flashcards
(9 cards)
WHAT IS CONDUCTION?
the transfer of energy from one atom or molecule by vibrations.
WHERE DOES CONDUCTION TAKE PLACE?
it takes place in solids liquids and gases, but it works best in solids because particles are closer together
WHAT IS CONVECTION?
is the movement of heat in liquids and gases. Particles are free to move around forming a cycle.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE COLD AIR IN CONVECTION?
cold air cools and sinks because it is denser.
WHAT HAPPENS TO HOT AIR IN CONVECTION?
hot air rises because is less dense
WHAT IS RADIATION?
the transfer of heat energy by electromagnetic radiation and specifically speaking by infra-red radiation.
WHAT SURFACES ARE GOOD ABSORBERS AND GOOD EMITTERS OF RADIATION?
dull,dark, matt surfaces
WHAT SURFACES ARE POOR ABSORBERS AND POOR EMITTERS OF RADIATION?
light, shiny surfaces
WHERE DOES RADIATION HAPPEN?
it doesn’t require particles so it happens in a vacuum.
